APO COE Strengthens Capacity on Carbon Credit Strategies and Biochar Solutions for Climate-Smart Agriculture

4 Apr 2025

NARO, as the host of the APO Center of Excellence on Climate Smart Agriculture (COE on CSA), organized a hybrid Capacity-building Workshop on Carbon Credit Methodology for Biochar and Other Carbon Dioxide Removal in Bangkok, Thailand, from 26–27 February 2025. Building on previous initiatives, such as a soil carbon visualization workshop in Japan and an international CSA conference that led to the selection of Thailand for pilot implementation, this event brought together 60 online and on-site participants from academia and the private and public sectors as well as 24 resource persons from Bangladesh, the ROC, India, Indonesia, Japan, the ROK, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam,

The workshop’s primary objective was to share best practices that reduce methane emissions and promote sustainable agriculture through carbon credit methodologies. Sessions delved into biochar production, carbon credit trading, and life-cycle analysis, fostering enhanced policy dialogue aimed at integrating Japanese biochar methodologies into Thailand’s agricultural framework.

The success of the workshop was reinforced by detailed presentations based on multi-economy case studies and expert panel discussions. These outcomes reinforce the APO’s vision for environmental sustainability and innovation-driven productivity while also laying a strong foundation for future collaborative projects targeting climate change mitigation in the agricultural sector.
