APO Secretariat Engages with Indonesia’s Manufacturing and Labor Leaders

On 31 January 2025, the APO Secretariat welcomed a delegation consisting of 13 representatives from PT Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indonesia (TMMIN) and the Confederation of All Indonesian Workers’ Unions. The delegation was composed of a diverse range of stakeholders united by the aim of improving productivity in Indonesia, such as Chairman Muhammad Jumhur Hidayat, Confederation of All Indonesian Workers’ Unions; Department Head Anton Sujarwo, Employment Services Transformation & Industrial Relation Department, Human Resources Division, TMMIN; Chairman Arif Minardi, Metal Industry Union; Head Keita Asai, General Policy and Research Bureau, Federation of All Toyota Workers’ Unions; and representatives from various levels of TMMIN’s union. This visit was part of a collaborative study mission focused on examining and enhancing productivity strategies within the automotive industry.

APO Secretary-General Dr. Indra Pradana Singawinata extended a warm welcome to the delegates, emphasizing the need to strengthen human capital and address inefficiencies at the company level. He underscored the importance of total factor productivity (TFP), highlighting that as well as labor productivity, efficiency gains through investments in technology, research and development (R&D), and process improvements are crucial for long-term growth.

The session featured presentations by the APO Secretariat, providing an organizational overview and an analysis of labor productivity and TFP trends across APO member economies, with a special focus on Indonesia. The session outlined the APO’s key productivity enhancement initiatives, including lessons from productivity gainsharing and labor-management relations programs. Delegates engaged in discussions on tailored solutions for Indonesia’s productivity challenges and received an update on the National Productivity Master Plan project, which supports the country’s efforts to achieve 8% economic growth by 2045.
Chairman Muhammad Jumhur Hidayat stressed the urgency of investing in skills development and technology adoption to drive productivity gains. He also highlighted the role of cultural productivity in shaping workplace efficiency. Delegates expressed strong interest in learning from best practices in other APO member economies, particularly in productivity gainsharing.

The session concluded with a reaffirmation of the collaborative spirit among all participants, emphasizing that this visit not only strengthened the ties between the APO and its Indonesian partners but also underscored their ongoing commitment to leveraging productivity for sustainable development.
