On 25 November, the APO Secretariat had the honor of hosting APO Alternate Director and NPO Head for the Philippines Dr. Majah-Leah V. Ravago, President and CEO of the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP), for a special presentation titled “Energizing the Future: Unlocking Productivity through Energy Transition.” This event took place at the APO Secretariat headquarters in Tokyo, underscoring the critical role of energy transition in addressing global challenges such as climate change and its impact on productivity across the APO region.
During her presentation, Dr. Ravago highlighted the transition from fossil-based fuels to renewable sources like wind, solar, and biomass, emphasizing the dual benefits of decarbonization and electrification. She articulated a compelling vision for electricity’s essential role in this transformative process, including addressing current challenges. Positioned as the primary conduit for future energy services, this shift is expected to drive significant transformations across various consumption sectors, including transport, buildings, and both commercial and industrial processes.
Dr. Ravago’s expertise, closely aligned with the APO’s three-decade Green Productivity initiative, brought valuable insights to the discussion. She illustrated how cleaner fuel mixes could lead to reduced disease incidence and healthcare expenditures due to lower air pollution, thereby increasing work efficiency. Additionally, the integration of digital technologies fostered by energy transition can enhance operational efficiency and stimulate innovation. Key strategies discussed included optimizing electrification stages, enhancing energy efficiency, and developing supportive policies to navigate the unique challenges faced by developing countries.
The session, initiated by APO Secretary-General Dr. Indra Pradana Singawinata as part of the Secretariat’s HR educational initiatives to keep staff informed about critical issues facing APO members, proved to be exceptionally informative. Dr. Ravago provided valuable insights that will greatly assist APO Secretariat staff in supporting members with relevant projects and activities. Throughout her presentation, she highlighted the critical importance of these strategies in the energy transition process.
