A study showed that 1.4 billion tons of perishable food is wasted worldwide due to inefficiencies within food supply chains. Cold chains are a solution to retain the quality and safety of perishable food from farm to fork, but further innovation is needed for longer shelf-life and better quality to meet growing demand, with broader adoption especially in developing countries. In this P-Innovator, Yasushi Hori, Director of MARS Company Inc., Japan, introduces its innovative cold chain equipment. The Kuraban is a refrigerator that keeps food fresh three to 10 times longer using unique technology to generate high voltage within the container, while the SeaSnow produces flaked ice from salted water to extend seafood freshness.
