As economies around the world are hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, basic income as a means to guarantee social protection has become a more mainstream concept. Spain is set to pay a basic income to millions of the country’s poorest households after cabinet approval in May. With other countries around the world considering similar policies, including some in the Asia-Pacific, it will be useful for citizens and public-sector officials to understand the key elements and debates surrounding these policies.
